About vCards

To read vCard and iCalendar attachments (so you can add contacts and appointment information directly into your electronic organizer), you may need updated e-mail software that can read this new standard. Programs like MS Outlook, Netscape Communicator, and others comply with the new standards and are available free or for a small charge.

Furthermore, we wish to point out that these attachments cannot contain viruses and that, while these files are tiny, there is no need to save them to your hard disk if you do not wish to use them. If your software can't read these files you probably need to upgrade it. See http://www.imc.org/pdi/pdiprodslist.html for a list of software that works with this standard. For background on what this all means, see http://www8.zdnet.com/pcweek/reviews/0630/30ical.html. Outlook is available to MS Office users at the Microsoft Website (see our listing for this product in our Technology Resources section).

We are told that the latest version of Netscape Communicator can also read these files. Go to http://www.netscape.com and download their free browser (the e-mail software comes with it). Similarly, if you wish to use the "lite" version of Outlook (Outlook Express), it also is provided free with MS Internet Explorer.
